Destiny won a National Lottery jackpot for a Dewsbury woman who scooped £1,218,618 on Saturday 19 July, 2008. Susan Crossland matched all six numbers on a line that her late father used to play – a line she felt would prove lucky after seeing white feathers on the anniversary of his passing.
Susan is 44 and married to Michael. She had been playing the lotto ever since it started, and adopted her late father’s numbers two years ago. Some people believe that white feathers are messages from the other side and indicate good fortune or blessings, and Susan saw plenty of them in the week leading up to her jackpot-winning draw.
“Michael and I always get up early and we turned on Teletext on Sunday morning at 6.00am to check our numbers,” Susan said. “I knew immediately that we had won as they were my father’s numbers. I started screaming and running round the house and then went to get the children out of bed so I could tell them too!
“My win must be fate which is why I saw the feathers and won on his number line. I sat in a daze until Sunday afternoon, I really couldn’t tell you I was doing, then I eventually called Camelot. It has been like a whirlwind ever since and the whole win feels very surreal at the moment!”
The couple had recently put their house on the market so that they could buy a bigger one and become foster carers. The seven figure win will allow them to move house and get started without delay. However, Michael doesn’t intend to leave his job at a local Dairy, and even turned up for work at 3:30 in the morning the day after the win!
