Michigan Mega Millions player David Sneath from the city of Livonia has had the wealthiest April of his life after winning the $136 million jackpot on 1 April, 2008. When he told his friends he’d landed the monster jackpot they thought he was playing an April Fools Day prank, but it was no joke.
David matched five main numbers from 56 and 1 Mega number from 46, beating odds of 1 in 175,711,536 to become the seventh Mega Millions jackpot winner in Michigan. The biggest jackpot won in the state was $208 million, and the $136 million prize of April 1st makes David’s win the second biggest. Other jackpots won have been worth $17 million and $75 million.
After recovering from the shock of winning, David decided to opt for a cash lump sum worth $84,367,246 before taxes. He has been playing the lottery with four close friends for several years, and plans to share his good fortune with them by giving each $1 million and making them all millionaires.
David has worked for the Ford Motor Company for 34 years in a parts warehouse, but that didn’t stop the 60 year old telling his boss, “I’m out of here” when he won the lottery. He is now planning to buy a cottage by Mullet Lake, a fishing boat and maybe even go back to school to finish a bachelor’s degree majoring in warehousing.
The winning Michigan Mega Millions ticket had been bought for David by his son, who had stopped at a petrol station to buy cigarettes. Little did he know that the favour would change things in a positive way forever. David’s son was with him at the official cheque presentation along with his daughter and “significant ex-” wife Deborah.
