A Leyton man who won a five figure sum in the EuroMillions lottery on Friday 26 September, 2008, is planning to treat himself by taking a trip to Las Vegas next year. Rene Darroux, who is 52 years old and works as a self-employed plasterer, matched five main numbers to scoop £62,713.10.
Regular readers will know that the EuroMillions draw on Friday 26 September was a guaranteed Superdraw, and all eyes were on the 15 second-tier prize winners because they were the ones who ended up sharing the jackpot fund. But there were 27 players who, like Rene, matched one Lucky Star less and still came away from the game with £62,713 each.
Like many self-employed workers, Rene is finding the current economic downturn difficult, so the win came at just the right time for him. As well as taking a trip to Las Vegas, he intends to reduce his mortgage and open a savings account. He found out about his win on the way to work.
“I was at the bus stop on my way to work when I checked my ticket,” Rene explained. “I couldn’t believe it when I realised I had matched five numbers, I looked up at the sky and then checked the numbers again. I still didn’t believe I had won so I called my son and he checked the numbers on the Internet. He called back to say I had won £62,713.10. I was in shock, but very happy.
“Winning this money is such a relief. I have a mortgage and being self-employed, especially at the moment, is difficult. But this win has given me a financial safety net which is brilliant. I am now able to go Las Vegas next year, which I couldn’t even think of doing before.”
