Winning Costa lot for Lottery winner

Last Updated: Monday 30th July 2018, 14:09

When Lawrence Cavendish won £5.5 million on the National Lottery in 1997 he thought all his dreams had come true. The press praised him as a worthy cause in need of a double-hip replacement and it looked as though no one more deserving could have won the jackpot. The generous lottery player soon started splashing the cash but eventually, upon moving to Spain has realised that winning has Costa lot!

The £5.5 million has gone, every single penny and the bank have seized Mr Cavendish’s Irish-themed bar and Spanish Villa and he is back in the UK, after losing the lot!

To put the £5.5 million win into perspective, at the time of the win in 1997, the lottery winner was launched to 61 on the Times rich list but the fickle finger of fate has not been kind. Mr Lawrence lost his best friend and then his father after his lottery win and bad luck seemed to haunt him.

Of course, we make our own luck, apart from when it comes to choosing the lottery numbers. However, this does demonstrate, as does the case of Michael Carroll why people should treat new-found fame with great caution. We all dream of winning the lottery, which is why we buy lottery tickets every week, but such a change in life requires much thought and can often be the undoing of many.

So if you’re lucky enough to scoop a big prize when you buy lottery tickets on Wednesday evening, do make sure you spend it wisely, or you could be borrowing your taxi-fare to the airport like Lawrence Cavendish!
