Lottery Grant for Historical Find

Archaeologists could hardly believe what they were seeing when they discovered a princess’s grave in a farmer’s field in Cleveland. The finds, which mainly consisted of jewellery give a rare insight into what life must have been like for a Saxon princess. And now thanks to a lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery fund, these finds are going to be displayed at a local museum for others to share.
The gold Anglo-Saxon Jewellery found at the grave is now to be put on show at Kirkleatham Museum thanks to a lottery grant for good causes from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is hoped that the £274,000 given to the museum by the Heritage Lottery fund will ensure that these finds are put on display before Easter next year.
Many of the pieces are associated with a rare Anglo-Saxon burial in which the female body of a high ranking Saxon lady is laid out accompanied by fine gold jewellery.
That means that thanks to your money, raised through the sales of lottery tickets will allow visitors to the museum an insight to the lives of people who lived in the region so long ago. This is the biggest discovery of its kind in the North East which is why it is so important to organisers to ensure that the pieces remain in the region for local residents to come and admire.
This is one of only twelve burial sites of this kind ever to be found in the UK and this money from the lottery will ensure that the museum will not only be able to display the pieces but also create a touring exhibition to allow enthusiasts from around the UK to have an opportunity to see the pieces.
